πŸ“š From Displacement to the Classroom: How 1,200 Girls Returned to School in South Sudan

Access to girls’ education in South Sudan remains a major challenge, especially for children affected by displacement, conflict, and poverty. Thousands of girls are forced out of school due to insecurity, early marriage, and lack of access to safe learning environments. For many families, survival takes priority over education, leaving girls at risk of long-term poverty and limited opportunities. Through targeted education programs for displaced children in South Sudan, Diko Creative Initiatives (DCI) is helping to change this narrative by bringing girls back to school and restoring hope for a better future.

Through its Back-to-School initiative, DCI has successfully supported over 1,200 girls returning to classrooms across vulnerable communities. The program focuses on establishing temporary learning spaces, providing school supplies, and supporting teacher training to ensure quality and inclusive education. Special attention is given to creating safe environments where girls feel protected, encouraged, and empowered to continue their education. These interventions are critical in ensuring that girls who have missed years of schooling due to displacement can catch up and thrive.

Beyond access to education, DCI works closely with communities to address the barriers preventing girls from attending school. Through community awareness campaigns and engagement with parents and local leaders, the organization promotes the importance of girls’ education and challenges harmful cultural practices such as early marriage. By involving communities in the process, DCI ensures that education becomes a shared priority, leading to increased enrollment, retention, and long-term impact.

The results of this initiative are transformative. Girls who once faced uncertain futures are now gaining knowledge, confidence, and life skills that will shape their futures. Education not only empowers them individually but also contributes to stronger families and more resilient communities. Investing in girls’ education in South Sudan is one of the most effective ways to break the cycle of poverty and build sustainable development.

At DCI, we believe that every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. By expanding access to education and creating supportive learning environments, we are helping to build a generation of empowered young women who can drive positive change in South Sudan. Together with partners and communities, we remain committed to ensuring that no girl is left behind.
