Our History

Diko Creative Initiative (DCI) was founded in the midst of South Sudan’s prolonged conflict by a group of courageous South Sudanese women who witnessed first-hand the devastating impact of war, displacement, and gender-based violence on children and families. Determined to respond, they officially registered DCI with the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission (SSRRC) in 2022 as a fully national, women-led non-profit organisation (Registration No. 5478).

Starting with emergency protection and GBV response in conflict-affected communities, DCI quickly expanded to deliver life-saving education in displacement camps, rehabilitate boreholes for clean water, distribute NFIs and shelter kits, and establish women’s village savings and loan associations (VSLAs). What began as urgent humanitarian relief gradually evolved into long-term development programming that tackles the root causes of vulnerability and builds lasting resilience.

Today, DCI proudly operates across all ten states and the three administrative areas of South Sudan, led by a majority-female Board (5 out of 7 members are women) and an all-South Sudanese team. From child-friendly spaces and accelerated learning programmes to climate-smart livelihoods and advocacy for children’s rights, every step of our journey remains guided by our founding promise: to protect the most vulnerable and create empowered, self-reliant individuals and communities.
