Ending Gender-Based Violence in South Sudan: Safe Spaces Giving Women a Second Chance

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a critical humanitarian and human rights challenge in South Sudan, particularly among communities affected by conflict, displacement, and economic hardship. Many women and girls face violence, exploitation, and limited access to support services, leaving them vulnerable and without protection. Addressing gender-based violence in South Sudan requires urgent, coordinated efforts that not only respond to survivors’ needs but also prevent future harm. Through its protection programs, Diko Creative Initiatives (DCI) is working to create safer environments where women and girls can heal, rebuild, and regain their dignity.

One of the most impactful approaches has been the establishment of safe spaces for women and girls, where survivors of violence can access psychosocial support, counseling, and case management services. These safe spaces serve as secure environments where women can share their experiences, receive emotional healing, and rebuild their confidence. In addition to direct support, DCI strengthens referral systems and community-based protection networks, ensuring survivors can access healthcare, legal assistance, and other essential services.

Beyond response, DCI focuses on GBV prevention and community awareness in South Sudan. Through engagement with community leaders, men, and youth, the organization promotes gender equality and challenges harmful social norms that contribute to violence. Training sessions and awareness campaigns help communities understand the importance of protecting women and children, fostering a culture of respect, accountability, and shared responsibility. These efforts are essential in addressing the root causes of violence and building sustainable change.

The impact of these interventions is transformative. Women and girls who once faced isolation and fear are now finding support, safety, and renewed hope. Communities are becoming more aware, responsive, and committed to preventing violence. By investing in child protection and GBV response programs in South Sudan, DCI is helping to build stronger, more resilient communities where everyone can live free from violence and exploitation.

At DCI, we believe that every woman and girl deserves to live with dignity, safety, and opportunity. Through continued partnerships, advocacy, and community-driven solutions, we remain committed to ending gender-based violence and creating a future where women and girls in South Sudan can thrive without fear.
