Clean Water in South Sudan

Access to clean water in South Sudan remains one of the biggest challenges facing rural communities, especially in areas affected by conflict, displacement, and limited infrastructure. For many families, daily life has long meant walking several kilometers to unsafe water sources such as rivers, swamps, and open wells. These conditions increase the risk of waterborne diseases, including cholera and diarrhea, particularly among children. Through its Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programs, Diko Creative Initiatives (DCI) is working to change this reality by bringing safe, reliable water closer to the people who need it most.

In 2025–2026, DCI successfully implemented a project that led to the construction and rehabilitation of 12 boreholes across rural communities in South Sudan. These boreholes are more than just water points—they are lifelines. Families now have access to safe and clean drinking water, reducing the time spent collecting water and allowing children, especially girls, to return to school. Women, who often bear the burden of water collection, are now able to engage in income-generating activities, improving household livelihoods and community resilience.

Beyond providing water access, the project also focused on community-led hygiene promotion and sanitation awareness. DCI trained local water management committees to ensure sustainability and proper maintenance of the boreholes. Communities were educated on safe water handling, handwashing practices, and the importance of sanitation in preventing disease outbreaks. These efforts align with DCI’s broader mission to improve public health and hygiene in South Sudan, ensuring long-term impact beyond infrastructure alone.

The impact of these 12 boreholes has been profound. Thousands of people now have access to safe water, leading to a significant reduction in waterborne illnesses and improved overall well-being. Schools and health centers in the targeted areas also benefit, creating healthier learning and care environments. This project demonstrates how targeted WASH interventions in South Sudan can transform lives, restore dignity, and build stronger, more resilient communities.

At DCI, we believe that access to clean water is a basic human right. As we continue to expand our WASH programs across South Sudan, we remain committed to reaching more underserved communities and ensuring that no one is left behind. Through partnerships, community engagement, and sustainable solutions, we are helping to create a future where every family has access to safe water, improved sanitation, and a healthier life.
